The Shypoke story begins in 1904 when Michael Heitz and his wife Louise emigrated to California from Alsace. They settled on a 50-acre parcel of land just south of Calistoga and set about clearing some of the valley floor for the planting of grapes. The varieties he carried with him included cuttings of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet, and Charbono. Near his home he built a small, stone winery and founded the M. Heitz label, which gained a loyal following. The winery continued to operate during prohibition until an unfortunate accident involving an overturned truck full of wine casks forced Michael and Louise to abandon production. The property later passed to Michael's son Fred who revived the vineyards, and then to his son Gary who inherited the property in 1987 and who continues the 100 year old family business. "Shypoke" is the folk name for the great blue Herons which inhabit the property.
